Redefine The Site _ Observe & Reinterprete

In Arch 201 second year studio students continue the study of gradually more complex functional and spatial systems. The idea of mapping and narrative is introduced and explored as a design generator. The focus of this studio is an exploration of the community at micro level. Students respond to the site requirements (social /cultural /physical) with the user at the core of their design decisions; exploring moments of the building, materiality, light, environment and the city.

Emphasis is given to Scale and the importance of studying different scales simultaneously.

A site specific project is given to students. Site analysis and mapping are at the core of the studio. Students are asked to respond to the notion that a building may mediate between the scale of humans, of the city and the environment.

The section is used beyond just as a representation tool but rather as a critical generator of strategic decisions. The use of sequential sections relates to the idea of movement.

The course also examines the connection between abstract design principles and the physical and visual environments.

Site_ Germasoyia River @ Limassol

There are three different areas along the river:

A.    The ending of the river to the sea [ from the coastal road to the sea] it ends up near the Limassol Municipal Olympic pool.

B.     The area above the coastal road, with the amphitheatrical arrangement including the medieval bridge

C.    The area that the river in its natural state up to the football court [included]

The notations, drawings and photos produced during and after the site visit will constitute some of your most direct forms of knowledge about the future project. The structure of actions followed in accumulating this information is as important as the content. The creative mapping of information establishes both the terms of individual investigation and the field within which ideas will be developed.
